What qualities do you want in a friend
Not long ago, I published an article about six qualities to admire in others , and the response was extraordinary. It seems that many people believe that certain qualities are not only hard to find in others, but when they are, they deserve to be acknowledged and admired. I prefaced the article by saying that the six I mentioned were by far not an exhaustive list, but included those traits that seemed especially hard to find. In reading all of the comments, however, I was inspired to write a follow-up list that covers some of the other qualities that I, as well as some of those who commented, believe to be important when looking for friendships and relationships with others. Our relationships are vital to our mental well-being.SEE VIDEO BY TOPIC: What's a Real Friend?

Qualities The Person You Call Your Best Friend Should Have
Friendships are important to almost everyone. A good friend can be comforting, grounding, fun to be with, challenging, and make you laugh when you need it most. Friendships are just like any other relationship and it is normal to have ups and downs and even the most rewarding friendships will not be perfect and that is normal. But what makes a quality friend? Some people like to have a large number of friends where at least one friend will be available to go out and do something or just talk on the phone.
Some people prefer a small number of close friends with whom they feel they can share their deepest and most personal thoughts and feelings. There is no right or wrong answer. It just depends on what you value and where you are in your life.
The friends you have in college may be very different than the friends you had as a child and have as an adult. Life is full of moments of elation, sadness, grief, frustration, and disappointments.
Having a friend to share these moments with can make such a positive impact on a person's life. Research shows that those with satisfying friendships experience higher and deeper levels of happiness.
It makes sense. We are social creatures. Think of the last time that you felt really happy or really sad. You probably reached out to someone and if you did not have anyone to reach out to, you likely felt like something was missing.
As social creatures, we have a need to be connected and to have strong, healthy relationships. An unhealthy connection or a friendship who do not bring good things to your life certainly is not going to increase your overall happiness. There are some qualities of friends are almost universal and there are some that are not.
For example, some people may want their friends to be adventurous so they have a friend to share experiences with, and some might need a friend who is very introspective enjoys philosophical discussions.
However, one quality that is arguably universal is a friend who cares about you for you, just the way you are. A friend who you can laugh, cry, and sit with contently. You want a friend who you can be vulnerable with and trust with your feelings and private thoughts.
Trust is central to any relationship. You can also tell if a friend is a good friend when they are sad when something bad happens to you and happy when something good happens. That might sound really obvious, but it is something that is not true for every friendship. Sometimes competition and jealousy can get in the way. If you are not sure if your friend is a quality friend, pay attention to her or his body language and words next time something big happens to you.
Do their well wishes seem genuine? If something bad happens, can you hear the worry and concern in her voice, or a slight bit of relief or happiness?
A good friend will have your very best interests at heart and want only good things happen to you and will be there to help you when you have a problem. A good friend will not use you. A friendship should have give and take. There may be times when you need help and there will be times when you friend needs help. A good friend may ask for a favor, but will not make demands or make you feel bad if you cannot do what she is asking.
Friendships have boundaries. There may be times when you need to be alone or things that you need to say "no" to. A good friend will respect your boundaries. If you feel like you are often put in uncomfortable situations or find yourself doing things you do not want to do, your friend probably is not respecting your boundaries. Let your friend know if this is happening.

Some friendships may be exactly what you need at a certain time in your life and then, suddenly, or over time, you may find that you have outgrown that friendship. Maye one of you moves or makes a big change and you find the friendship does not bring to your life what it once did.
Now, it's important to not give up on a friendship. Talk to your friend and maybe it is something that can be salvaged, but if it cannot be, that is okay. We change and we grow and that means our friendships do as well. Think of it like a tree. Some friends are in our lives for a short time, like leaves. The leaves are beautiful and important while they are there and it is natural when they fall off. Some friendships last longer like branches. Again, just as important and needed, but not permanent.
And there are usually a few friendships like the trunk and the roots that you will carry with you always, or at least for a really long time. Like trees, friendships need care and nurturing to maintain their quality. It is okay, healthy even, to have disagreements and discord at times. If you never do, it probably means that one of you is not being honest about feelings and needs as no two people will always agree.
It is just important that you and your friend are able to discuss what is happening and find solutions. It does not mean the friendship is any less of a quality one. There is no exact answer for what makes a good friendship because we are all different and our needs change. Every connection varies from person to person.
The chemistry we have is dependent on our personalities, interactions, and experiences together. This means every type of relationship - friendship, parental, brotherly, sisterly or romantic has an impact on us. The most important thing is that your friendship adds to your life and makes you feel connected, valued, and loved.

The 8 Defining Characteristics of a Best Friend
Here are the top seven relationship ingredients that have surfaced over the years. I encourage you to consider these qualities in light of your current friendships and, if you are married, in light of your relationship with your spouse. These are qualities to internalize in your own life in order to become a better friend. You can also use them as a measure to consider not judge potential friendships in the future. Take a genuine interest in others.
Sometimes, it can be difficult to peg down the good characteristics of a best friend. Friendship isn't always easy and sometimes the best thing one friend can do for another is an unpopular decision. Other times, a good friend seems to be anyone who is fun. While friendship might not be simple, there are a few traits of a good friend that every teen should keep in mind.
What are the qualities of a good friend? True friendships can start instantly but they take time to build. Here are a few qualities to look for when making friends as a teen -- and beyond. Good friends may not share every detail of every second of their life, but they do try to be clear about their intentions. This means that they try to present an accurate picture of who they are and how they respond in different situations. When something doesn't seem right, they let you know. This is a given, and probably the reason you became friends in the first place. But there's a lot to be said for chemistry and shared interests.
How To Find True Friends
Friendship is one of those undervalued topics in our culture. Just as we value achievement over process and staying busy over taking time to rest, so we value intimate partnership high above platonic friendship. And yet, as many happily married people will tell you, the reason why their marriage is successful is because of their strong friendships. And as many happily single people will tell you, the reason why they're happy is because of their solid network of support. However, great friends don't grow on trees, as I often tell my clients who are longing to meet more kindred spirits.
Friendships are important to almost everyone. A good friend can be comforting, grounding, fun to be with, challenging, and make you laugh when you need it most.
